The Edison Chen photo scandal is a media scandal in early 2008 involving Hong Kong actor Edison Chen, actresses Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan, Cecilia Cheung, and possibly other female celebrities.

In January 2008, nude photographs of people resembling the actors engaging in sexual acts with each other were distributed on the internet. As at 4 February 2008, eight people have been arrested for being connected with the distribution of the photos. The affair has dominated news headlines in Hong Kong for over a week.

The Hong Kong police enlisted the assistance of Interpol, but the spread of the photographs has proven unstoppable. The actions of the actors and their management in this matter have made heroes and martyrs of those arrested; the actions of the police have raised concerns about violation of human rights and the deference to powerful media tycoons.

The first nude photo, of a man and a woman resembling Chen and Gillian Chung, was published at approximately 8:30 pm, 27 January 2008, in a post on the website Hong Kong Discuss Forum. The genitals and nipples of the woman and head of the man could be clearly seen. Although the original post was deleted after a few hours, some visitors forwarded the photo to other major forums such as Uwants and HKGolden. Chung’s management agency, Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG), immediately denied that the photos were authentic and filed a police report.

At 3 p.m. on the same day as EEG’s statement, a second explicit photograph of a couple with the likenesses of Chen and Bobo Chan engaged in fellatio appeared on the internet. An emergency meeting was held at EEG immediately that evening, after which the company declared through its solicitors that it would pursue the publisher of the image for this “irresponsible” and “malicious act”. Gillian Chung was reportedly very distraught, had taken a leave of absence, and would not comment on the matter.

Shaped by the denials, the initial media consensus, later played down, was that the photographs were photoshopped. The news became the headline of several major local Hong Kong newspapers, including Apple Daily, Oriental Daily News, The Sun, Headline Daily, and Metro News.On 29 January 2008, at 12:30 p.m., a third photograph, of a woman fondling her nipples while her legs were wide apart appeared on the internet. The photograph was of a much higher resolution than the previous shots, and the subject bore the likeness of Cecilia Cheung.

The photographs became the talk of the town, and journals attempted to authenticate the photographs by comparing physical features of the starlet. Local discussion forums became saturated as a result. A low-resolution composite of a sexual sequence (photos 4 to 7) of a couple, possibly Chen and Chung, with the female wearing a bikini at the start of the sequence appeared at 3 p.m.; a photograph, allegedly of Cecilia Cheung standing naked in a bathroom with her back facing the camera appeared at 6 p.m. Journals in Mainland China compared the backgrounds of the photographs to previously released videos filmed inside Chen’s residence. The police, and photo experts who examined the photos involving the first three female celebrities, say the photos are unlikely to have been photoshopped.

On 6 February 2008, a forum user named “Kira” leaked more photos and promised to release a 32-minute video, allegedly of Chen and Chung, on 7 February 2008. In spite of the ongoing raids in Hong Kong, Kira reportedly wrote that he did not “give a sh*t” since he was “not in hk” to begin with. [source]

The computer apparently contained hundreds of pictures and several videos of Chen during intimate moments with his sexual partners, more than a dozen of whom are equally popular celebrities in Hong Kong.

The photos were allegedly copied by technicians of the shop but surprisingly found their way to the internet only early this year. The first racy pic — presumably showing Chen and actress Gillian Chung having sex — was said to be posted on a Hong Kong discussion board on January 27. From then on, the photos spread like wildfire not just in Hong Kong but in other countries.

In 2000, former celebrity manager Kim Seok Jin shot to notoriety after a sex video of him and his charge - K-pop singer Baek Ji Young - started circulating on the Internet.

He then fled to the US but made headlines again last week, this time for statutory rape charges.

Kim, 45, was arrested by the police in the Koreatown area in Los Angeles on suspicion of having sex with a minor aged below 18, reported Yonhap News Agency.

He is also known by the name Kim Si Won in Korea, although his real name is said to be Kim Seok Wan.

He had been on the US wanted list for two years.

A request for bail was put up but rejected by the US court last Tuesday, after US officials received an extradition request from the Korean government.

In his hometown, Kim is allegedly wanted by the Korean police for defamation charges related to the production and circulation of sex videos on the Internet, said The Chosun Ilbo.

The newspaper also quoted a Korean music industry executive who said ‘we have to wait and see if he (Kim) will be brought back home’.

So far, Ji Young has yet to comment on the news.

Sources close to the singer told The Chosun Ilbo that she ‘may not want her name mentioned in connection with Kim since the sex tape scandal nearly ruined her career’.

Theirs was a scandal not unlike that which plagues Hong Kong actor Edison Chen and female stars like Gillian Chung and Cecilia Cheung.

TALK OF THE TOWN

Their sex photos appeared online in late January and have been the talk of the town since.

Over in Korea, Ji Young, 32, was last seen in public on 2 Feb, performing at a charity concert at Yonsei University in Seoul, reported My Daily.

Two days later, she reportedly underwent vocal cord surgery to remove a cyst that had caused her voice to break during performances.

She is now supposed to rest and not talk for three to four months, to allow her vocal cords to heal.

But Ji Young has been through worse trials and trauma.

Debuting in 1999 with a sexy image and a hit salsa single, she was soaring up the music charts when a sex video involving her and Kim was leaked on a pay-per-view pornographic website in November 2000.

Kim later admitted in a phone interview with a live entertainment programme on TV that he had filmed the video without Ji Young’s knowledge in his office in 1998.

Public outcry ensued and TV stations, radio stations and advertisers alike were quick to boycott Ji Young.

But instead of making herself out to be a ‘naive and silly’ victim and making a fast exit, the plucky singer put up a fierce fight to stay in showbiz.

Times Asia said she ‘defiantly vowed’ to continue singing ‘if a single fan wants me to’, and her resilient attitude won the support of feminist groups and others.

But it was not so easy to sway public opinion.

Severing ties with Kim who had fled the country, Ji Young managed to release a new album in the aftermath of the saga but failed to convince Korea’s three main free-to-air channels to lift their bans on her.

ADULT CONCERT

She went on a long break and in 2003, made a brief comeback by becoming the first Korean female singer to stage an ‘adult concert’.

As she was clad in incredibly skimpy outfits and performed risque dance sequences, only those aged 19 and above were allowed entry to her show.

In 2006, Ji Young made a full comeback by ditching her sexy dance-pop image and crooning love ballads in her new album Smile Again, which ended up topping several music charts.

The TV stations finally welcomed her back, but the sex video incident continued to haunther.

‘I hope people only think of me as a singer when they hear my new song,’ she told The Chosun Ilbo then.

‘The scandal I was involved in will never be forgotten even when I’m very old, whether I succeed or fail, but it’s painful to hear people talk about it whenever something happens to me.’

She added that she felt ‘victimised’ and ‘desolate’, but managed to pull through with the support of her family and friends.

More recently, Ji Young was under fire for a totally different reason.

In the United States, movie stars often suffer from media scandals, but I'm hard-pressed to think of anyone recently who has voluntarily given up the business as a direct result. In the light of ongoing stories like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, it's startling to hear 27-year-old Hong Kong movie star Edison Chen declare that he will be retiring from show business due to a scandal.

The scandal began about three weeks ago, when private photographs that belonged to Chen surfaced on the Internet. The photos, stolen off his computer when he took it in for repairs, showed Chen and several different paramours, including actresses Cecilia Cheung (The Promise) and Gillian Chung (Twins Mission), in various stages of undress; some were sexually explicit. "I admit that most of the photographs being circulated on the Internet were taken by me," Chen said at a press conference, according to Variety. "But these photographs were very private, not to be shown to people." In front of hundreds of journalists and camera crews assembled for the press conference, Chen "apologized profusely to the 'ladies' in the pics, his parents and to the people of Hong Kong."

Chen began his career with glamorous but ineffective performances, but has grown steadily as an actor, to the point where he was very convincing as a desperate assassin in Dog Eat Dog, one of my favorite films from 2006. He's also appeared in the very popular Infernal Affairs trilogy, among many other roles, and reportedly filmed a bit part in the upcoming Batman sequel, The Dark Knight. Even though his profile outside Asia has been limited, he had a bright future ahead of him. "I will be away from Hong Kong entertainment indefinitely," he said. "There is no time frame," leaving open the possibility that he will come out of retirement one day. Meanwhile, the actresses must decide how to deal with the damage to their careers and reputations.
